THE VOID and the Classic Murder Mystery
by Timothy S. Johnston

The Classic Murder Mystery has a strict formula: an isolated and claustrophobic location, a small cast of characters that includes a killer and an investigator, a storm with power outages, a rising body count, extreme paranoia, and a shocking reveal near the end. THE VOID is no exception to these rules. It’s a murder mystery that takes place in the future, yes, but it’s also a “classic” murder mystery.

Agatha Christie was the queen of this type of story. AND THEN THERE WERE NONE and THE MOUSETRAP are the preeminent examples. I wanted to take this genre and twist and transform it into a futuristic thriller. Science is a crucial element in the cause of death, and the investigator, Lt. Kyle Tanner, must decipher the clues and figure out the science to not only catch the killer, but to also save his own life.

The futuristic setting has allowed me to use extremely unique and hostile locations. Whereas Christie used a rural inn closed in by a blizzard, or an island with no transport on or off, I’ve used a remote space station in THE FURNACE, a scientific outpost on an ice moon in THE FREEZER, and a disabled research vessel stranded in the vast loneliness of interstellar space in THE VOID.

The science is easy to understand and is key to the murder. If you enjoy thrillers, murder mysteries, science fiction, horror, or medical mysteries, I know you’ll love THE VOID.
